Names without parenthesis are the names associated with the music on the ride music selection pulldown list in the game.

Names in parenthesis are descriptions I gave to the sounds. "circus sounds" is the sound you hear comming from the Circus flat ride. "crowd sounds" is the sound you hear when the park fills up with peeps. "main title music" is the RCT2 theme music you here on the Main Title screen. None of these music files are available for selection in a ride music selection pulldown list.

The 11 "fairground organ music" files contain the music that plays from the Merry-go-round flat ride. These files play sequentially and then repeat. This music also is not available for selection in a ride music selection pulldown list.

HELP: I could use assistance matching the fairground organ music files with the actual song names of the music being played. Here is a list of the songs...

March - Children of the Regiment
Heyken's Serenade
In Continental Mood
Wedding Journey
Tales from the Vienna Woods
Slavonic Dance
Das Alpenhorn
The Blond Sailor
Overture - Poet and Peasant
Waltz Medley
Bella Bella Bimba

=========================

The following music is new to RCT2:

Organ style
Mechanical style
Modern style
Pirates style
Rock style 3
Candy style

Also, there is a new 1:02 minute Fairground Organ Music file (css12.dat).

The main title music is also different in RCT2, replacing the title music that was available in RCT1.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a readme (CUSTOM.TXT) in the games Data directory stating that you can still add two custom music files that will appear on the ride music selection pulldown list. Full information about the music file format as well as what the names MUST be and what directory they must be placed in can also be found in this file.

I have tested this, and they do work. I have also tested if music from RCT1 can be used as one of these custom music files, and they all appear to work just fine (including the old RCT1 theme music).

Note however that you CANNOT replace existing DAT music files with replacements, because the game will fail to load. This means for example that if you wanted to replace the Band Organ with new songs like you could in RCT1 (like for example the ones Steve Franks made available for RCT1), it is not possible.

==================

BTW, since all but the original RCT1 theme music is included in RCT2, you only need to copy and rename the theme music file css17.dat from RCT1. Also, you can still select your two favorite Steve Franks Band Organ music files and make them your custom music 1&2 choices to play on rides.

======================

CS put anti-cheat code into the game to prevent having the regular in-game music replaced (e.g., Steve Franks Band Organ Music replacement files will no longer work). For some reason however, he did not do the same for the title music (an example of rushed software release I am guessing). Therefore you CAN replace the new "funeral dirge" theme music with the old RCT1 theme music (css17.dat). [I think it's pitiful that the opening music seems to match the opening screen shots... "exciting" scenes of the parking lot with droopy headed depressed peeps].

BTW: The CSS files DAT extension can be renamed to WAV and played directly on your computers music player.

=====================
Sorry to jump in so late on this topic. I HAVE been able to replace a number of the css**.dat files with renamed .wav files. Not ALL of the files can be replaced (I tried and it crashed while loading), but here are the ones I've managed to customize successfully:

css3.dat - The Dodgems beat Style Music (28 seconds long)
css17.dat - The Opening Window Music (1 min 43 sec)
css41.dat - Organ Style (5 min 15 sec)
css42.dat - Mechanical Style (1 min 16 sec)
css42.dat - Modern Style (2 min 57 sec)
css44.dat - Pirate Style (1 min 33 sec)
css45.dat - Rock Style 3 (1 min 53 sec)
css46.dat - Candy Style (1 min 16 sec)

...plus the Custom1 & 2.wavs, of course.

One thing I've noticed though is that the game apparently knows how long these sounds should be and loops them accordingly. For instance, if the new song/sound is longer than the old one, it waill stop at the time index of the old one and start over...so you never hear the end.

If the new sound is shorter than the old one, it will play all the way through, loop to the beginning, then stop at the original's length and start all over again. It can be kind of annoying...

However, the file for css17.dat (the Opening Window Music) doesn't seem to have this problem...although mine does "stutter" a bit when reloading the game data. Haven't heard an odd repeat, though. Seems to loop just fine anyway.

Basically, I just created the .wav files with the format outlined in the custom music .txt file, changed the extension to .dat and renamed them to replace the originals.

Notice what AmazingEarl told us. Most of thoes files are the "New" music in RCT2. Maybe the old RCT1 music has locks on it?

====================

Its been a while since this thread was updated, so here is what I have learned. The fairground organ heard in the game is probably the 69-keyless Voigt organ formerly located at the Bressingham Steam Museum, UK.

------------
The following fairground organ music files have now been positively identified:

css4.dat = Children of the Regiment (Die Regimentskinder)
css5.dat = Heyken's Serenade
css8.dat = Tales from Vienna Woods (Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald)
css12.dat = Bella Bimba
css13.dat = The Blond Sailor
css14.dat = Poet and Peasant (Dichter und Bauer)
css15.dat = Waltz Medley

---------------
css6, css7, css9, and css11 have yet to be matched with the songs "In Continental Mood", "Wedding Journey", "Slavonic Dance", and "Das Alpenhorn".

My lack of progress on this front is not surprising, seeing that these songs were encoded over half a century ago, and have long since fallen from popularity. It would certainly be helpful to the RCT community if anyone can identify these last four songs. I don't know, but I suspect that "Das Alpenhorn" was composed by Heinrich Proch (classical music, opus 18). Again I don't know, but "In Continental Mood" may be an Irish Dance and "Slavonic Dance" may be one of those written by Dvorak. However, although unlikely, keep in mind that it is also possible that some or all of these four are original compositions made just for this band organ. Good luck in the hunt
